THE STARLING

Sturnus vulgaris
UK Conservation Status
(RED)

Social songsters with shiny feathers and common garden visitors. These gregarious birds are probably most famed for their stunning murmuration displays.

At first glance the Starling looks dark and uninteresting, but look closely and you will see so much more. Greens, purples, magenta and blue make up the iridescent colours of this stunning bird.

In the winter these birds have little white spots that look like little hearts. Their character sometimes seems boisterous but watch them closely and you will see a very intelligent bird with an incredible range of noises. Did you know the Starling can mimic sounds it hears. I have heard some copy the sound of my camera, and copy other bird calls.
